Vladimir Palant, the developer of the popular
AdBlock Plus application, decided that, starting from version 2.0, the extension
will not block “normal” ads. A new filter will appear among the
filters , and the
Allow non-intrusive advertising option in the
Filter Preferences menu will be enabled by default.
“Normal” (acceptable ads) are static banners without sound, preferably with text instead of graphics and one script. These are preliminary criteria that will still be discussed. Eligible advertisements will be unlocked on
sites with which relevant agreements have been signed.
A survey of users of AdBlock Plus showed that only 25% of users of the program are categorically against advertising in any form. The rest understand that the sites need some source of funding. Thus, the new behavior of the program will be accepted by the majority of users, and the remaining 25% can simply change the settings.
The most ardent opponents of innovation can simply fork the project.

According to the developers, the AdBlock Plus extension was not created at all to destroy online advertising, but to give the user control: what ad he wants to watch, and what he considers intrusive and wants to block. Everything should be in the hands of users. Thus, the new policy is supposedly not in conflict with the original goals of creating the program.
AdBlock is the most popular Chrome and Firefox browser extension. The author of the starting version 0.5 is Michael McDonald. Since 2006 (version 0.6), Vladimir Palant has been almost exclusively engaged in development. A year ago, he began to devote all his time to this project, but
complained about the small amount of donations. Three months ago, a commercial company
Eyeo GmbH was created to work on the project. A couple of days ago there were funds to hire the first developer in the staff:
Andrey Novikov .
