The non-profit foundation
Linux Fund launched a joint project with the VISA payment system for servicing branded plastic cards for the second time. A similar program was already launched in 1999, and thanks to it, it was possible to raise more than half a million dollars to finance free projects such as Debian, Blender, FreeGeek, the WikiMedia Foundation, and
others . Now the validity of those cards has expired, and therefore the fund issues new cards in US Bank (USA) and MBNA Canada Bank (Canada) banks.
The owner of such a Visa card automatically makes charitable donations to the Linux Fund every time it makes a payment transaction from its account — these deductions are taken away from the standard bank commission.
