Mozilla and Google may not renew a cooperation agreement.

Every year around this time, Google and Mozilla extend the collaboration agreement, one of the points of which is the establishment of the Goodness Corporation search service with the default service for the Firefox browser. Naturally, Mozilla does not do this for free, and the money received by the company is approximately $ 100 million a year. The first collaboration agreement was concluded between Google and Mozilla in 2007, and since then the budget of the latter company has become very dependent on the “help" of Google.

In fact, more than 80% of Mozilla’s budget consisted of funds from Google. The extension of the contract should have happened last week, but so far neither Mozilla nor Google have confirmed or refuted the renewal of the contract. In addition, Mozilla does not comment on the current situation, saying that "there is nothing to tell about." If the renegotiation of the contract really does not happen, Mozilla will have very serious financial troubles. Judge for yourself - a hole in the budget of 100 million dollars - this is a very big trouble.

In addition to Google, Mozilla also has a cooperation agreement with Yandex, Bing (that is, Microsoft), with Amazon and some other companies. But the main "sponsor" of Mozilla was (and perhaps still remains) Google. For the latter, a logical step is not to cooperate with a direct competitor, because the Chrome browser has surpassed Mozilla Firefox in popularity (according to StatCounter). So, refusing to cooperate with a competitor, Google is losing little, but it saves $ 100 million, which is a lot even for such a large corporation.

Without additional funding Mozilla will be difficult to compete with Google - it may well be that the schedule for the release of new versions of the Firefox browser is now “stretched”. This, of course, plays into the hands of Google with its browser, new versions of which are “baked” almost every week. In general, in the case of a non-renewal of the Google agreement with Mozilla, the future of the browser of the latest company becomes a bit hazy.
