IBM introduced Lotus Notes 8

Last week, after two years of work, IBM Lotus finally released version 8 of Lotus Notes and Domino.

In such a long-awaited new version of the collective work system, a new user interface has appeared, as well as new tools and opportunities to improve the usability.

The client version is based on the Rich Client platform based on Eclipse, which is an example of implementing IBM's strategy, which is the ability to centralize the creation and distribution of any client applications centrally, which is achieved by creating client interfaces built on a common platform. In addition to the traditional features of Notes, the overall client environment becomes an open client for hybrid and composite applications.

Hardly Lotus Notes 8 will take away the share of users from the Microsoft Outlook client, but those who used Notes earlier will like the new version. “Organizations that use Notes's mail client can offer their users an e-mail client that is not inferior to any other,” says Barton Group analyst Karen Houbert. Lotus Notes 8 has extensibility with plug-ins, ODF editors for working with text, spreadsheets and presentations, and the ability to manage user profiles.

By basing the environment on an open standard, Java system administrators will also receive the means to change menus according to usage patterns and to initialize users' workstations by distributing packaged files that are easily opened on the client side.

Instant messaging will also be included in Lotus Notes 8.
