IBM and Micron announced the start of joint production of memory controllers that will work 15 times faster! This chip is called Hybrid Memory Cube. The sales of the product will Micron, the largest manufacturer of memory in the United States.

The developers have announced that the new controller will realize the full potential of dynamic memory (DRAM), and will also help bridge the gap between the speed of the processor and memory. Initially, the technology is designed for use in high-performance systems such as servers, but the developers claim that, in the end, the product will appear in the consumer market.

The IBM technology, called TSV, implements special channels through which it connects to each individual stack. This technology will be combined with the latest Micron DRAM.

Hybrid Memory Cube will offer a speed of 128 gigabytes per second. For comparison, now the speed of the memory controllers is 12.8. Another Cube requires 70% less energy to transfer data, and takes up only 10% of the current analogues.

Hybrid Memory Cube will be manufactured at IBM's East Fishkill, New York, plant. Microcircuits will be produced on 32-nanometer process technology.

Chip shipments will begin in the second half of 2012.
