Statistics about iOS devices and OS versions from Instapaper
Marco Arment (Marco Arment) is a well-known web and iOS developer, blogger. In 2008, he launched Instapaper and still develops and maintains it himself, which in itself deserves respect. Before that, he worked at Tumblr. He also, along with 5BY5, has a great technology podcast - Build & Analyze .(translator's note)
I received a lot of good feedback from the developers. They say such publications are helpful. Because I see no reason not to spam updated statistics every couple of months.
Here are the most recent data about people using the Instapaper application: ')
Comparing with the data for August , you can see several expected trends:
The share of iOS 5 is gradually increasing, but it is too early to demand it. (only 49 days have passed since release)
The share of iOS 4 is now 99.8%, which is so much that it is very unsafe to require iOS 5
Developers of games and applications with high processor loads can celebrate the continued penetration of faster hardware. At least, the 3GS level processor is now 98.8% of iPhones and iPads. Applications that require high performance can probably start demanding iOS 4.3 (87.8%) to insist on reducing the support of a much slower and older processor in the iPhone 1, iPhone 3G, and 1-2G iPod Touch.
If you take iPads, then the processors are 3GS-or-better in 97.4% of devices, A4 or better - 89.4% of devices, and A5 - 36.4% of devices in this sample.
We can also draw some conclusions about the sales of Apple devices:
Until now, the iPhone 4S has been selling excellent, especially considering that this is only the 47th day of sales.
Sales of iPad 2 were stable, but seemingly not breathtaking. Let's see what happens after the holidays: last year I saw a huge increase in sales of iPad 2 at Christmas and the next few days.
However, very few iPad 2 buyers choose the Verizon 3G model. (I chose, but regret it - I wish I took the GSM version.)
* Instapaper began to require iOS 4.2 from the latest versions. I only heard from one person who was upset that he stopped working on his original iPhone. He also noted that many of his other applications have been recently updated and also require iOS 4.
