Probably, the shutdown of this service is even more important than the closure of the Google Wave service. The fact is that Site Explorer allowed you to get fairly complete information about any site, including information about donor sites. In other words, Site Explorer was actively used by SEO representatives to determine the quantity and quality of backlinks to certain resources. And regular webmasters sometimes worked with this service, checking who links to their site (as a supplement to other services).
And if services like Google Webmaster or Yandex Webmaster require proof of ownership of the site so that resource assessment functions can be used, then Site Explorer allows you to view backlinks for any sites. Naturally, this service was used very actively, there are quite a lot of resources on the Web that work with the Site Explorer functionality. Now this function is not there, and "child" services, of course, also do not work.

It may well be that this useful Yahoo tool will soon be revived as part of the Bing Webmaster Center project. But also not the fact that it will be available without confirmation of ownership of the resource, or that it will be completely free. In any case, if Site Explorer really becomes part of the Bing Webmaster Center, the latter will become extremely popular.
It is worth recalling that the Site Explorer from Yahoo began work in 2005, and almost immediately began to be actively used by many categories of IT professionals. But, of course, those who are engaged in SEO work most of all with the service.
