Examples of "rotated" startups

In continuation of the topic “A thin start-up on the turn ”, I can give several examples of projects that started from one and became another.

YouTube

The project was launched in 2005 as a video dating service called “Tune In Hook Up,” in a form very similar to HotOrNot.com. Once in this form the project did not take off, the authors of the project decided to score on dating and make a simple service for posting videos. That's it, and in a simple way, users now upload 35 hours of video to the service every minute.

Paypal

The project began with a Palm Pilot money transfer service. Renowned investor Peter Thiel saw in this service a much greater potential - the transfer of money between Internet users. After that, he made an agreement with eBay, servicing 40% of his transactions, and has now grown to 100 million users.

Flickr

The project began as a role-playing online game called Ludicorp. At some point, the authors realized that they had a solution in their hands for a much more massive problem, and they stopped developing the game and focused on creating a service for simply uploading photos to the Internet. Now this is probably the largest photo hosting site on the Internet.

Groupon

In 2006, The Point project was launched, the purpose of which was to bring people together to solve various social and political problems. Groupon then appeared as one of the parts of this project and was even located at groupon.thepoint.com. However, over time, it turned out that the process of group purchases with discounts attracts people much more than all other problems. This year, Groupon held an IPO, the second largest in the world after Google’s IPO.

Yelp

The project began in 2004 with the creation of an automated system for sending requests and receiving recommendations from friends via e-mail. Although this project received $ 1 million in investments, it failed to fly up in this form. Users began to use the service in a completely different way - they wrote reviews about nearby places just fan. As a result, the project changed its orientation and turned into a semblance of the yellow pages and has already collected 17 million such reviews.

In principle, such an example is a huge amount. And it might also be useful for you to take a look at your project from the side and see where else its original idea could get it.
