Home Virtualization or Atom Virtualization

There was a desire to expand the functionality of the centralized storage, and electric bills prompted the idea of changing the hardware from Intel Celeron to Atom. One of the advantages is that Atom is functional even without active cooling. Thus, only hard drives remain subject to mechanical damage. In the event that performance claims were justified, it would still fit in the FreeNAS repository. So, the tests:

Iron:

1. Linksys router WRT54GL

2. The Intel Desktop Board D510MO

3. 4Gb Kingston RAM
4. PCI-IDE extender on board only SATA ports
5. 2x120Gb IDE Hdd for System and Storage
6. 1-wire usb adapter
7. APC UPS with USB port.

List of CPU performance for comparison.

Even after the release of the Intel D525MW solution with an Atom D525 processor, there was no point in updating the system.

Soft:

1. Ubuntu 9.10 is installed on Atom.
2. During the installation of Ubuntu, on the 120Gb created Software mirror RAID
3. Ubuntu installed

Virtualization:

As a virtualization platform, Vmware server 2.0 was selected and the following virtual operating systems were created:
  1. Web server with Apache (RAM 384MB)
    a. Vtiger - for billing and storage of invoices.
    b. Gallery3 - for storing photos and videos. Web interface included.
    c. Rsync - is responsible for the distribution of photos and videos to remote PCs for viewing offline. Photographs are stored in 3 copies - in the original size, in a reduced and in the form of thumbnails.
    * cwRsync clients are on Windows, they get the photo in its original size.
    * rsync - is on the Android phone, and it gets a reduced view of 640x480
    d. Subsonic - MP3 Library and Streaming on the Web
    e. OCS Inventory NG - obtains information from 20 Windows and Linux systems
    f. Glpi - Displays information from OCS Inventory

  2. Kablink iFolder (RAM 384MB)
    * Opensorce analog Dropbox, clients installed on Windows machines.
  3. EBOX (RAM 384MB)
    Now renamed to Zentyal
    a. OpenVpn - for VPN access for 10 clients
    b. Squid - you never know where there is a filter on the sites, have your proxy.

  4. Windows XP (RAM 384MB)
HomeSeer and JV Caddx Plug-In are installed on this virtualk to control home alarms. The main functionality is arming and disarming, as well as storing the history of events.
    a. GE Security Alarm Panel . NX-10
    b. PCB -NX584 -Caddx with RS232 interface board. It is connected to the Serial port of real hardware and is transferred from the panel to Virtual Windows XP.

Also through this virtualku organized backup access to the VPN network through Remote Desktop.
Only services necessary for work are left.

Total: 215 EUR

Conclusion

Energy consumption: Atom system consumes 36 kW per month, which is 4.5 EUR at our prices. This is 2.5 times smaller than the previous system on Celeron.
Power: The system built on the Atom successfully maintains 4 virtual machines. As a home virtualization platform, the system at Atom has been living for almost 2 years and coping with its tasks.
Cost of use: without a specific body kit for 2 years 8.25 EUR / month:

In the sequel - the selection of iron for the transfer of PCI bus in a virtual machine and the transition to Core i5-650 from ESXi.
