Adobe gives Flex to open source

After the cessation of development of the Flash Player for mobile devices and the dismissal of 750 employees, Adobe reported another not very good news: it was decided to abandon the further development of the Flex SDK. After the next release of the Flex 4.6 SDK, which is scheduled for November 29, the project will be transferred to open source in the same way that Adobe recently donated PhoneGap to the Apache Foundation.

Of course, Flex users can hardly be happy with this prospect, because the future of Flex now looks very vague. True, Adobe says that the open source project will be led by several developers from the Flex SDK team, as well as several well-known members of the Flex community, including members of the Spoon Project. In addition, employees of large corporations who are Flex users and cannot migrate anywhere should participate in the development.

Thus, the development of new functionality for the Flex SDK will continue, and Adobe will contribute to this, although it will not be the same as before.

However, in the long run, Adobe officially recommends that all its customers use HTML5, rather than Flex, for developing enterprise applications, despite the fact that right now Flex has clear advantages. Some of the current leading developers of the Flex SDK at Adobe will be transferred to HTML, and Adobe plans to participate in the development of some open technologies, such as WebKit, jQuery and PhoneGap, as well as create new tools in this area.

The development plan for Flex, of course, will be revised to reflect its transition to open source. The functionality that was planned to be introduced earlier will be transferred to the new plan, and the dates will be revised. The document will be drafted immediately after the organization of the new Flex project steering group

At the same time, Adobe emphasizes that the “liquidation of assets” has not affected Flash Builder and its support continues.
