November 10, 2011
Dear users of the Steam and Steam forums.
On Sunday, the sixth of November, our forums were hacked. We began to investigate this incident, and found that the invasion affected not only the forums themselves.
')
We found out that in addition to the forums, hackers also gained access to the Steam database. This database contained information such as account names, encrypted (salt-hashed) passwords, shopping lists, email addresses, physical addresses and encrypted credit card information. We have no reason to believe that encrypted credit card numbers or other personal information fell into the hands of intruders, or that the protection of credit card numbers and passwords was cracked. We are currently investigating.
We also have no data indicating that the attackers used credit cards. However, you must carefully monitor the use of your credit card.
At the moment, we only know about several forum accounts that have been stolen, but all forum users will have to change their passwords the next time they log on to the forum. If you use your password from the Steam forum on any other accounts, you must change these passwords too.
We do not know any Steam account stolen, so we do not plan to force users to change passwords (since Steam accounts are different from forum accounts). However, it probably makes sense to change the password, especially if it is the same as in your forum account.
We will open the forums as soon as we can.
I am very sorry that this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.
Gabe
