W3C returned

The recent decision of the editor of the HTML5 specifications of Jena Hickson to remove the widely used element <time> ( bug 13240 ) caused confusion among many developers. Representatives of the W3C consortium experienced the same emotions. A few days after Hickson’s controversial decision, they restored the status quo.

Paul Cotton of Microsoft Canada on behalf of the W3C says that the whole situation was due to a misunderstanding. For some reason, information about the notorious “bug 13240” did not arrive in time to the working group of the HTML WG (apparently due to the use of an incorrect component Bugzilla in the tracker). Since the information has not been received, this is the basis for the cancellation of the decision made, in accordance with the procedure .

By decision of the W3C, the editor for the specifications of Ian Hickson must make the necessary changes no later than November 8, 2011, otherwise the W3C staff will do this on their own. Bug 13240 will be transferred to Last Call WG status, so that in the future the specification editor will not be able to decide on it bypassing the working group. This issue will also be discussed at the personal meeting of the participants of the HTML WG.
