Raspberry Pi will start selling in December

On Habré , the ultra-miniature computer Raspberry Pi costing $ 25 was repeatedly discussed. The British game developer David Braben (the author of the once-popular space game Elite) has been creating it for half a year. As the mass production approached, the computer grew a bit older: now it looks like a credit card, but the cost remains the same: $ 25 for the basic version, according to a charity model.

Soon there will come a point that many look forward to. In December, David Braben starts selling the device . The first batch will be for enthusiasts, that is, for experiments and testing. Already purchased 10,000 sets of components, which from December 2011 will be sent to production as needed - and immediately sent to customers.

Sales will go in the order of the first line, so that by Christmas, not everyone can get the device. The day and time of the start of sales will be announced on the site and on Twitter in one of the December days.

Next year, David will release a “custom” version of Raspberry Pi, with Ubuntu OS and office software package, games, video player, etc. Connect a TV or monitor, keyboard, mouse, modem, SD card to such a “flash drive” and launch 1080p video without brakes , play Quake 3 and other games, edit documents and surf the Internet.

The interest of the public in the new PC form factor did not escape the attention of the big players, who are probably following the David Braben experiment. First, NVIDIA showed itself, which filed a patent application with the US Patent Office describing a Portable Computer System measuring 40–60 mm in length, 10–20 mm in width, and 5–10 mm in thickness. As a hardware platform, Tegra with an ARM processor, a flash module, a RAM block, a USB port, Wi-Fi support, IEEE 1394 (FireWire), D-Sub, HDMI, DVI and other interfaces are indicated.
