The creators of iPod presented their new project: self-learning thermostat

In the summer it became known that a couple of unnamed ex-engineers from Apple on behalf of an unnamed startup are preparing to present an unnamed product. As it turned out, Tony Fadell came out of Apple - two years former senior vice president of Apple’s iPod division and lead engineer Matt Rogers. And yes, in their new product that same iPod-like “click wheel” is used.

But this is not about the new generation music player. Instead, they developed a thermostat. Yes, Tony Fadella’s new startup, Nest Labs, decided to bring Apple-level design and functionality to the drawers that are installed on the walls of a quarter of a billion US homes and offices and that control their internal temperature. What for? Fadell is sure that all existing thermostats are ugly and too difficult to use. He wants to take something that no one ever thinks about and make him a “favorite” object in the house.

Nest claims that their new product will become not only the most stylish thermostat, but also the most intelligent. In one week, it will fully enter your mode and adjust the temperature accordingly. For example, he will know that the whole family leaves home at 9 am and will begin to return at about 4 pm. All this thanks to a set of six sensors that monitor indicators such as temperature, light, humidity and movement.

Because of these sensors, Nest will know that you are not at home if you do not notice any movement for a long time, and that you need to lower the temperature. If you install several thermostats, they will work independently, but at the same time interact with each other: so if you enter the lobby, the thermostat at the top will know that you are at home.

So, about the "click wheel". Nest has an outer ring that can be rotated to lower or raise the temperature. The screen shows the temperature in red when it is high and in blue when it is low.

As befits the twenty first century, the device supports Wi-Fi, which allows you to configure Nest settings online or from an iOS device (the Android app also promises). In the parameters you can set the maximum and minimum temperature, as well as a four-digit password for child protection.

Wired called the Nest ipod thermostats. And it is. But it's still a thermostat, and a thermostat that costs $ 100 more than most others. Will so many people overpay for the traditionally boring Apple-style design? This will be known in November, when the device will be on sale. Best Buy and the Nest Labs website are already accepting preorders.
