Today, many developers use HTML5 to create applications. The advantages of this tool include ease of development and the ability to run applications on a wide range of platforms with minimal modifications to the source code. A simple application, such as Notepad, can work equally well in a desktop, phone or tablet browser.
Today we launched three new HTML5 resources in order to share with developers the experience in creating HTML-based applications gained in our company and among other industry leaders:
- An HTML5 resource center that comes to the rescue during the development, testing, and deployment of web applications.
- An HTML5 blog that publishes information on a wide range of HTML5 topics. The authors of the publications are Facebook employees and leading industry experts.
The development team, which is a resource that allows developers to ask a question of interest on HTML5 and share experiences with colleagues.
What is HTML5
From a formal point of view, HTML5 is a set of specifications developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). In practice, HTML5 refers to a set of open source programming technologies for developing modern web applications. The structure of these technologies, of course, includes HTML, as well as CSS, JavaScript and a set of new APIs that were previously available only to traditional applications. When used simultaneously, these technologies allow you to create modern web applications.
Work on various platforms and devices
Today, browsers are available for almost any type of device, from phones, tablets and computers to TVs. Developers using HTML5 have the ability to create applications for a wide range of devices with minimal changes to the source code. Many developers, including Facebook, use HTML5 when creating mobile applications, as this approach simplifies the process of reaching the audience of users working on different types of devices.
An example is the
Words with Friends application. Users can play this game from virtually any device. At the same time on different devices using a single source code based on HTML5, created by developers Zynga, and users have access to the game from mobile phones, tablets and browsers, desktop computers. You can learn more about the application at

But compatibility with a wide range of platforms is only one of the advantages of this technology. Web applications can spread from one user to another using social media channels, including Facebook, which has about 800 million users on desktop computers only. In addition, as of last week, more than 350 million Facebook users come online from mobile devices, which opens up new perspectives for application developers.
