Overview of twenty-two free fonts from the Open Font Library website: 16 fonts with Cyrillic + 6 ornamental and special character fonts

Today I mentioned already the difficulties that anyone who wants to find on the Open Font Library website with Cyrillic fonts are facing. There is no filter by language; a search for the word "cyrillic", as dimitrymd managed to make sure , finds only a dozen fonts.

I feel, therefore, that it makes sense to compile and lay out a more complete list of local fonts that have Cyrillic support. The order of the fonts will be alphabetic:

  1. Consolamono
  2. Crimson
  3. Dataface
  4. Designosaur
  5. Didact gothic
  6. GNUTypewriter
  7. Grana padano
  8. Jura
  9. Neocyr
  10. NotCourierSans
  11. Old standard
  12. Pfennig
  13. Press Start 2P
  14. Sansus webissimo
  15. Triod postnaja
  16. Vds

"For a snack," I also intend to survey half a dozen fonts with various special characters and ornaments:
')
  1. Chess
  2. FivefoldOrnamentsEtc
  3. Futhark adapted
  4. Knots
  5. Unicons
  6. Web Symbols

Consolamono

Monospaced font with rounded diagonal lines. It has a single (direct) outline. A screenshot of this font looks like this:

[font screenshot]

Crimson

Font trap. Cyrillic support is declared (“Basic Cyrillic”), which is actually absent. I added it to my review because anyone who stumbles upon the Cyrillic alphabet anyway will stumble upon it anyway - let it not be very surprised at the failure. A screenshot of the Latin letters of this font looks like this:

Dataface

The symbols of the only outline of this decorative font chaotically change their position and parameters. As a result, it looks like this:

[font screenshot]

Designosaur

This font is available in two styles (italic and direct). It differs by a small difference in the height of lowercase and uppercase letters. The outlines of the letters are pleasant. The line "L" with the capital "i" is not confused. A screenshot of italics looks like this:

[font screenshot]

Didact gothic

The font of the simplest outlines, according to the author’s intention, is intended for studying the alphabet. Apparently, there is no hinting at all: in small sizes (30 pixels or less), the font is horrified by its clumsiness. A screenshot of this font looks like this:

[font screenshot]

GNUTypewriter

A good imitation of the typewriter font. This font is not very rich in characters missing from typewriters. The outline is also one (direct), like theirs. Evon looks like:

[font screenshot]

Grana padano

Thick strokes of this font are associated with thin strokes through thickenings. Latin letters are to the face, while Cyrillic sometimes looks extremely unusual. In addition, kerning, to put it mildly, strange. Inscription only. The font looks like this:

[font screenshot]

Jura

This font , distinguished by its deliberate squareness (and elongation in width) of its outlines, has four outlines: regular (“book”), bold, light, and medium. Hinting nikakushchy (especially noticeable in bold). The screenshot of the font looks like this:

[font screenshot]

Neocyr

Decorative font, the only face of which differs intricately curved features of letters. Their lower tails are insignificant in size. Interestingly, the author also provided the letter “m” with a tail equal in length to the tails of the letters “d” and “y”. A screenshot of this font looks like this:

[font screenshot]

NotCourierSans

Monospaced font in two styles (in normal and in bold), which is the fruit of the collaboration of seven designers. Apparently, the screen (as opposed to printing) was never intended, because in some font sizes it looks much worse than in others. Here is a screenshot of this font in the size of 24 pixels - here it looks more or less normal (not counting the combination of the letters “ir”):

[font screenshot]

Old standard

Serif (serif font), created by Alexei Kryukov. Successful imitation of typography of the beginning of the XX century. It has three styles: direct, bold, italic. I did not notice any hintings, but for all the merits of this font, this is not his problem. It looks something like this:

[font screenshot]

Pfennig

This font exists in four outlines (direct, italic, bold, bold italic) and pleases the eye with thoughtful contours of the contours. Kerning, however, is sometimes scary (note the letters "ml"):

[font screenshot]

Press Start 2P

Pixel Font . According to the author, imitates the outlines of the symbols of the computer game Return of Ishtar (1986); Cyrillic characters (which, of course, was not in this game) look like this:

[font screenshot]

Sansus webissimo

This font is available in two styles - ordinary and italic. Chopped bold font in unfinished outlines. Can be used to replace the font Impact, I think so. A screenshot of this font looks like this:

[font screenshot]

Triod postnaja

A font with good hinting, having the only mark that successfully imitates the font of 20th century Orthodox literature, published in Church Slavonic. Looks like that:

[font screenshot]

Vds

This font exists in four styles - ordinary, oblique, bold, oblique bold. Its simple forms remind me of the letters that students draw in drawing lessons:

[font screenshot]

Chess

This font contains images of chess pieces in four similar variants: black on black cells, black on white cells, white on black cells, white on white cells.

FivefoldOrnamentsEtc

This font contains a whole series of five-pointed stars and other symbols that are symmetrical with respect to a 360 ° / 5 = 72 ° rotation , as well as elements important for Discordian dogma.

Futhark adapted

This font contains Futarka runes.

Knots

On positions whose unicode code corresponds to the “Box Drawings” code page (the symbols of which are intended for making rectangular patterns), in this font there are tracings of traditional (ancient) Celtic knots, the purpose of which is exactly the same. An amazing example of semantic conformity and at the same time the creative reinterpretation of Unicode.

Unicons

Special characters depicting the inside of the circle from which a particular icon of the modern user interface is cut. According to the author, this font is suitable for the design of certain buttons and actions on sites on the Internet.

Web Symbols

This font has already been described on Habrahabr . I added it to my review in order to show how it is easy to stumble upon an old acquaintance on the Open Font Library website.
