New tzdata time zone database address

ICANN has decided to place on its servers a tzdata time zone knowledge base, whose fate was threatened after a recent lawsuit . According to ICANN, the hosting of this database is consistent with the objectives of the organization, one of which is to support the stable operation of the Internet.

Now tzdata is located on the Internet Address Space Administration (IANA, a division of ICANN) servers at http://www.iana.org/time-zones .

Reportedly , Arthur David Olson, the last maintainer of the database, has been trying to find a new project sponsor since 2009, in order to retire. Negotiations on this issue with ICANN have been going on for at least six months . The lawsuit that Astrolabe, Inc., the developer of astrological software, filed against Olson, only accelerated the procedure.

ICANN will make tzdata available during the trial, including historical data. In addition, ICANN is committed to take on all legal issues that may arise.
