Google+ is the best example that Google doesn't understand the Platform.

One of the leading Google developers, Steve Yegge (Steve Yegge) accidentally published a great letter online, which he wrote for a closed circle of readers. Soon he hurried to delete the text, but the copies had already gone online.

To the credit of Google, after the leak of information, they did not apply any disciplinary sanctions to Steve, and he allowed to publish the letter in third-party sources, apologizing to colleagues.

The context of this letter is a serious decline in Google+ attendance in the last week, which occurred after a sharp rise in the previous week, when invites were canceled.

So this is a very sincere text in which Steve compares Google with Amazon, where he worked for six and a half years, and these were nightmarish years. In general, the comparison is entirely in favor of Google. There are a couple of hundred things by which these two companies can be compared, says Steve, and in almost all Google looks better, except for three (two of them are absolutely insignificant).

Amazon’s most important advantage is the software interface infrastructure that permeates absolutely all the company's services. She began to design around 2002 in a rigid discipline. The company's director, Jeff Bezos, without fail ordered to provide communications of all services strictly through internal interfaces, regardless of the technology used. At the same time, the interfaces themselves must be open to the outside.

This is one of the most correct things that Jeff Bezos, the “control maniac” and the “micromanagement master”, has done all along. With the advent of such interfaces, Amazon has become a source of profit for thousands of third-party sites and simply an unsinkable e-commerce platform.

Returning to Google, Steve Yegge believes that his current company does not understand the concept of creating a platform at all, and this may threaten the company in the long term. In no case, says Steve, you can not produce any product without an API, especially such a product as a social network.

Google+ is a “knee-jerk reaction” to the current events, it is a solution from a short-term strategy and is not effective. This Google development only demonstrates a complete misunderstanding of the concept. For comparison, Facebook was able to make a platform for independent developers, there are a lot of third-party applications, and each user can go about his business: there are hundreds or thousands of different applications in which you can hang for days.

Even Microsoft understands the importance of creating a platform, writes Steve Yegge. All is not lost for Google. You can design the platform and promote the API now. Better late than never.
