In order to stop using its own program code for “criminal” purposes, the company decided to close the source code of the program, limiting cooperation to its official partners only. This is not very good news for anyone using popular BitTorrent clones: µTorrent, Azureus, BitSpirit, BitComet, Shareaza, BitTornado, Tomato (under Mac OS X) and many others. However, the closure of official source codes will not affect the development of these independent projects, since the open source community does not need the help of BitTorrent to improve its programs.

The latest version of BitTorrent 6.0 was released at the end of July. It is made on the basis of the µTorrent client, bought six months ago with the developers, and the source codes of this program will not be published on the Internet.
