Nginx received $ 3 million investment

Nginx Inc. announced the receipt of the first tranche of venture capital investments in the amount of $ 3 million. Venture funds Runa Capital, BV Capital and MSD Capital have invested in the creation of a new commercial product, which should be released before the end of October.

Three million dollars will be spent on US expansion by Nginx Inc., opening an office in San Francisco in October-December 2011, and hiring staff.

Igor Sysoev developed the first version of the Web server Engine X (Nginx) in 2002-2004, being a full-time employee of Rambler. In July 2011, he founded his own firm Nginx, and in October 2011 - joint-stock company Nginx Inc. Today, the Nginx web server is installed on more than 40 million domains on the Internet (8.5% of the total) and owns a share of more than 20% among thousands of the largest websites, including Facebook, Dropbox and WordPress.

It can be calculated that if at least 1% of sites switch from free to the commercial version of Nginx, then venture capital investments will pay off with interest. Seems like a win-win deal. By some estimates , for $ 3 million, investors received up to 40% of the shares, as well as two seats on the board of directors.
