EC2, Azure, App Engine, Rackspace, and other cloud hosting speeds

Independent company Compuware during the year conducted tests on the performance of all cloud hosting. For tests used its own software CloudSleuth. On their website, anyone can see the test results for the last 30 days, but now for the first time the full statistics for 12 months has been published.

Each hosting contains a two-page store site: the first contains 40 products and JPEG images, and the second has a large picture weighing 1.75 MB. 30 nodes are used to measure download speeds: 18 are in the USA, five are in Europe. Checking is done every 15 minutes. During the period from August 2010 to July 2011, 515 thousand tests were conducted.

So, the most interesting. The winner for the year was the Windows Azure data center in Chicago, which performed the test in 6.07 seconds (annual average). In second place - Google App Engine with 6.45 seconds. Only two participants managed to overcome the threshold in seven seconds: the GoGrid data center in Virginia and the OpSource data center in Virginia. Only after them follow the famous cloud providers Rackspace (Texas) - 7.19 s and Amazon EC2 (Virginia) - 7.2 s.

Note that due to the peculiarities of the distribution of the Google App Engine load, this service has been tested in its entirety, and not in individual data centers. In March and June, it was Google App Engine that was the leader in speed, in the other months the first place was taken by Windows Azure, and it won by the end of the year.

Windows Azure rather steadily improves its results every month. For example, in July of the current year, that is, in the last month of measurements, Azure had a figure of 5.52 s.

Of course, the real speed of the data center strongly depends on the region where the data center is located. For example, Singapore's Azure and Amazon data centers showed a terrible result of 16.1 seconds and 20.96 seconds, simply because there was no Compuware test network in that region.

Windows Azure (Chicago) leads not only in speed in North America, but has demonstrated an uptime of 99.93% over the last month. At Rackspace (Texas) - 99.96%, Amazon EC2 (California) - 99.75%, Amazon EC2 (Virginia) - 99.39%, Google App Engine - 97.69%.
