StatCounter: in December, Chrome will overtake Firefox and become the number 2 browser in the world

According to StatCounter statistics , Chrome browser will overtake Firefox and reach the second place in the world no later than at the end of December 2011. So far, Chrome is inferior to a few points, but stable growth throughout 2011 makes it possible to make such a short-term forecast with almost 100% probability.

For the current year, Chrome added about 50%, increasing its share from 15% to 23%. Over the same time, Firefox lost approximately 13% of the audience, and IE lost 9% of the audience.

According to the latest StatCounter statistics for September 28, 2011, Chrome had 23.6%, Firefox had 26.8%. IE is still in the first place, all versions of which collectively control 41.7% of the market.

Other statistics services give Chrome a slightly smaller share. For example, Net Applications uses a formula with a more accurate approximation for countries from which a small amount of data is collected. In particular, they more accurately estimate the figures for China, where there is a huge number of users and there is not even approximate statistics. In theory, Net Applications should have more accurate data. According to their estimates, the share of Chrome at the end of the year will be about 17.8%, while Firefox will be 22.3%, so even if the current growth rate is maintained, Chrome can claim to be second in the world not earlier than mid-2012. At the same time, Net Applications estimates the current share of IE is much higher than StatCounter - at 55.31% (see Net Applications statistics for August 2011 ).

One way or another, StatCounter and Net Applications converge on the main point. The trend is that Chrome is rapidly building up positions, and the shares of IE and Firefox are falling. Now there are only three major players on the global browser market.

In Russia and the CIS countries, as usual, a completely different picture is observed. There are not three, but four major players, and the positions between them are distributed differently. According to LiveInternet statistics , in September 2011, all Opera and Opera Mini versions in total showed a result of 31.97%, Firefox - 23.09%, IE - 20.93% and Chrome has only 15.95%.
