Analysts can’t decide which laptop manufacturer comes first

In the second quarter of 2007, there was a collision in the Russian notebook market: according to Gartner analysts, the primacy belongs to Asus, while IDC and ITResearch are considered to be Acer's leader. Discrepancies in the top three are caused by quite significant differences in the data.

According to Gartner, in the second quarter of 2007 about 482 thousand portable computers were supplied to the Russian market, which is 43% more than in the same period of 2006 and 22% less than in the first quarter of the current year, when 622 thousand devices were sold. . In general, the quarter was a “failure” and many vendors reduced their shipments compared to the beginning of the year, which led to a reduction in the entire market in the past period. Against this background, for the first time in the last two years, Asus has ceased to be the “catching up” leader. Showing almost a triple increase in sales compared to the same period last year, the vendor doubled its share - to 29% and outpaced its competitor - Acer, which ranked second in the rating with a share of 27% (22.5% in the first quarter last year). According to Gartner, Toshiba ranks third with a share of 10%, Dell and Fujitsu / Fujitsu Siemens each own approximately 5% of the market. The only major Russian manufacturer, Rover, was out of the top five: the vendor reduced its market share almost 5 times and now controls 4.6% of the market against 21% in the same period last year.

However, according to another analytical agency - IDC, the market volume in the second quarter was less - 467 thousand, and Acer - retained its leading position with a share of about 28%. So, according to IDC, Asus delivered less than 30 thousand laptops what counts Gartner. Therefore, Asus was in second place with a market share of 23.5%. Comments in the Russian office of Asus could not be obtained. In third place IDC puts the Russian player - the company Rover - 10.5%.

Vasily Mochar, deputy director of the company, believes that the difference in market valuation could be caused by differences in the methodology for calculating data. “Unlike Western agencies, our report has a format not sales in, but sales out. We consider the volumes actually imported, cleared and sold to resellers, i.e. we estimate the real current market capacity, ”the expert noted.
