Will IIS server catch up with Apache in 2008?

Judging by the current growth rate, the Microsoft IIS web server can catch up with the free Apache web server sometime in late 2008. The popularity of the once undisputed leader Apache fell to a nine-year low.

Such an unpleasant fact for many follows from the latest Netcraft Web Server Survey statistics on the number of hosts operating on a given server. In August 2007, in just one month, the territory of IIS increased by another 2.3 million hosts, and in relative figures its share grew by 1.4 percentage points to 34.2%. The share of Apache has dropped to the minimum in the last nine years, at 48.4%.

The graph shows that the rapid decline in Apache has been observed for more than two years. In just two years, the difference between Apache and IIS has decreased from 50% to 16.7% (and among active sites - to 12.2%). If it continues like this, by the end of 2008 IIS will catch up and overtake Apache. True, a mysterious third player can intervene in the battle of two giants.
