Nokia is working on the creation of a new mobile OS Meltemi

Yesterday, an interesting news was published on Habré that the MeeGo and LiMo operating systems will be integrated into the Tizen OS. Today there was another similar news regarding the new development of Nokia. As always, “sources close to the company's management” reported that Nokia is now working on a new mobile operating system designed for installation on budget phones. The future OS has already received its own name: Meltemi.

It is reported that this OS is based on Linux, and heads the development department Mary McDowell (Mary McDowell), executive vice president of Nokia mobile division. As mentioned above, the new mobile operating system is designed exclusively for installation on low-cost devices from the Finnish manufacturer.

The company wants to become at least to a small extent independent of the software of other companies. If everything is really good with the new OS, and the project is completed, the Finnish company will be able to reach a new stage of development thanks to its own mobile platform.

Experts compare this step Nokia with a similar model of work carried out by the South Korean company Samsung. Here, for more or less top-end devices, they use Android, and for budget phones - their own OS Bada. And this scheme of work is quite successful.

Now on the mobile phone market there is an interesting trend. Users even expect from the budget devices expanded functionality, including comfortable access to the Network and other services. And of course, if the mobile operating system for budget devices from Nokia is successful, it will make all such devices more popular among consumers.

Yes, and budget phones now make up 47% of the company's business, so it urgently needs to take a number of steps to popularize its devices. Diversification of own software, ensuring independence from software of other manufacturers, expanding the functionality of their mobile devices - all this may help the company to overcome the crisis.

Unfortunately, so far the release date of the new Meltemi OS on the market is unknown.
