Microsoft is going to patent a modular smartphone

As I recall, attempts by Microsoft to enter the mobile phone market as their manufacturers ended in failure. These are the Kin One and Kin Two models. Nevertheless, the company continues to develop new cellular projects, and on September 22 a patent was filed for a new development: a modular smartphone.

Of course, modular devices are not something surprising, they occasionally appear on store shelves. But the project proposed by the corporation is really something. The base is a smartphone slider, which has a special connector (at the bottom) for connecting additional modules. Thus, it is possible to significantly expand and complement the functionality of the basic device.

A full-fledged QWERTY-keyboard, a game controller or even a spare battery that allows you to extend the device’s operation time are offered as plug-in modules. There is also the possibility of connecting the second display, if you are interested in this opportunity. Thus, the connection of additional modules is an option for people who wish to get along with one universal device, rather than buying several specialized devices.

If you need to go where temporarily will not be able to charge the phone, you can connect a spare battery. There is a desire to play - we connect the game controller. I want to boast an unusual device in front of colleagues and friends - we connect the second display. In general, the idea is interesting, and we can even assume that if the phone does go to the masses, a market of secondary accessories, modules for this device will be formed.

Here is the full version of the patent , if anyone is interested.
