Today, the “old man” .SU celebrates its 21st birthday: On September 19, 1990, the UNIX User Association (SUUG - Soviet UNIX User's Group) registered the top-level domain .SU for use in the USSR. About a year later, the Soviet Union ceased to exist, but the .SU domain remained to live and became the basis for the formation of the Russian Internet community. The domain zone is “growing up” quite successfully: if the current growth rates are maintained, by the end of the year .SU will overcome the 100,000 registered name bar.



In 1994, registration in this domain zone was suspended due to the opening of the .RU domain. Only in 2002, the new administrator of the Internet Development Fund zone renewed registration. In 2006, the international organization ICANN considered the issue of domain closure, but in the end, it was decided to assign the status of .SU exclusively reserved, which guarantees its preservation. By the way, the same status has been granted to the domain zone of the European Union .EU and the domain zone of the UK .UK.

Today, the total number of domains registered in .SU exceeds 97.4 thousand, of which:
IDN domains (domain names containing the characters of the national alphabet) - 13.6 thousand
two-character - 1,5 thousand
three characters - 9 thousand
numeric - more than 700.

In 2011, the increase in the number of registered domain names was more than 5.5 thousand (the growth of the .SU registration market is more than 6.0%). It should be noted that more than 50% of registered domains are domains with age up to 2 years.
