Xbox 360 processor: 65 nm - today, 45 nm - tomorrow

After a year or two, the Xbox 360 will receive a 45-nm processor
The race of nanometers, typical of the computer segment, successfully reached the entertainment segment, namely, the game consoles. And if earlier gamers didn’t care what processor was installed inside consoles and according to what standards it was made, today such concepts as technical process and nanometer are not alien to the owners of the add-ons. Especially quickly, these words should have been learned by fans of the Xbox 360 console, which Microsoft plans to regularly expose to “heart surgery.”

The software giant, with the help of chip maker Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing, has already produced the first such intervention: the first installments of the Xbox 360 with a 65-nanometer processor, which replaced the chip manufactured at 90-nm technology, are about to appear. The second operation to replace the "heart", according to sources, will take place in late 2008 - early 2009. By that time, the 45nm process technology will be quite debugged, and a new version of the Xbox 360 will enter the market - this time with a 45-nm pebble in the chest.

What will it give to gamers? Well, except that the lack of problems with overheating, with which the current owners of the console from time to time face. The remaining benefits, such as reduced power consumption and a slightly lower cost of manufacturing the processor, will go unnoticed.
