Linux 3D games run under FreeBSD faster than under Ubuntu

The comparative performance tests of Ubuntu Linux 11.04 and the FreeBSD Linux ABI “emulator” on PC-BSD 8.2 (this is the FreeBSD version for desktop computers) showed an amazing result . It turned out that OpenGL games show better performance under FreeBSD than in their native Linux environment.

At first glance, this is contrary to common sense, because an additional level of abstraction would seem to lower the speed of code execution. But the fact is that FreeBSD Linux ABI is not a virtual machine and not an emulator in the traditional sense, but an environment for the native execution of Linux libraries.

The tests used systems with an AMD Phenom II X3 710 processor, NVIDIA GeForce video cards, see full configuration , performance comparison was performed using software for automated performance testing of Phoronix Test Suite systems and OpenGL benchmark Unigine Heaven.

The PC-BSD / FreeBSD system running Linux libraries showed about 8% better performance than Ubuntu Linux 11.04 in tests with a resolution of 1024 x 768, and in tests with a higher resolution, the difference increased to 60%.

On older benchmarks, PC-BSD / FreeBSD also has an advantage.

Higher performance FreeBSD has proven itself in real games, especially when activating a higher screen resolution. For example, here are the results with the famous Nexuiz game.
