Mobile communication in the hauls and stations of the St. Petersburg metro

This is our third study of communications and mobile Internet in the subway. The previous ones dealt with the Moscow metro , but this time we “landed” in St. Petersburg.

Brief information for those who are not familiar with the St. Petersburg metro

Technology research was exactly the same as before. The study was conducted in three stages, during the study three different subscriber terminals were used.

Stage 1
August 17-18
Detour of all metro lines 3 times, with different subscriber terminals, on the basis of indications of which 2g / 3g coverage was recorded.

Stage 2
August 19
On the basis of detours, operator coverage maps were prepared (2pcs per operator - 2g coverage / 3g coverage). These data were sent to the press services of the operators in order to obtain a preliminary comment from them, indicating the points where we could be mistaken.

Stage 3
August 20-21
The final detour of the subway, during which special attention was paid to the stations and the routes that were indicated by the operators. In case we detected an error in the first run, this data was recorded.

The study showed that they had communications at all stations, except for the “Bypass Channel”. The station was opened relatively recently (December 30, 2010), and operators promise to launch their base stations there in the near future. 3G coverage is underground only at MegaFon and MTS, which covered 62 and 38 stations, respectively. Drives are seriously “covered” only by “MegaFon”, which serves without disconnection of 2G with a network of 30 hauls, 3G - 16 hauls. At the same time, partly (the network is present a substantial part of the way), 2G is covered by another 20 haul, 3G - 11 haul. The company MTS, which is also actively developing its network in the metro, is completely covered with only 2 legs of 2G, and 1 with the 3G network.

Already traditionally, we have prepared on the basis of the study an interactive metro map , a reflective coating.
