Crowdsourcing and social media - new words in the Merriam-Webster dictionary

The Merriam-Webster English Dictionary has been supplemented with regular neologisms that reflect the changes in modern society and have already become part of our lives.

The 2011 edition includes more than 150 new words , some of which are related to computer technology. In brackets is the year when the word was first noticed by linguists, even if in a different meaning.

Tweet (tweet, 1768) - a short message in the microblogging service Twitter;

crowdsourcing (2006) - the practice of getting services, ideas, or content from large groups of people online;

social media (social media, 2004) - forms of electronic communication, such as social networking sites or microblogging, where users create online communities and exchange information, ideas, personal messages and other content, such as video;

robocall (robocall, 1993) - a phone call from an automatic service that transmits a pre-recorded message to a large number of people;

m-commerce (m-commerce, 1997): business operations carried out using mobile electronic devices (for example, a cell phone).

Among the words from other fields of activity there are several that are still missing in the Russian language:

helicopter parent (1989) - a parent who is overly involved in the life of his child;

boomerang child (boomerand child, 1988) - an adult who returns to life with his parents, especially for financial reasons;

Parkour (parkour, 2002) - a combination of running and overcoming surrounding obstacles;

Bromance (bromance, 2004) - close friendship between men, not implying a sexual relationship.
