velcom Android Belarus a year later
About a year ago, velcom announced a velcom Android Belarus contest - a competition of mobile application developers for the android platform. Conducting velcom competition, obviously tried to attract attention as a phone seller, and more importantly, create local (Belarus-oriented) applications so that the phones could turn from just a cool toy into a useful thing for the masses.
This is how the goal of the velcom competition is seen.
“The aim of the competition is to initiate the creation of mobile applications that are relevant for Belarus, as well as the support of Belarusian developers.”
The task of supporting Belarusian developers, it seems to me, the competition was successful.
But on the part of the usefulness of the Belarusian resident, some (yes, almost all) applications noted by the jury to the contest raise doubts about me.
I will not give a full repost of my opinion about the winners of the competition; anyone interested can read my blog at the link at the end of the note, in short - I am surprised by the decision of the jury regarding third and first place.
I'm more interested in the readers' opinion, was the experience of holding velcom Android Belarus successful? Is there any sense in the so-called “local applications” for Belarus? From the rather big zoo of programs that gave rise to the competition, there were only a few really demanded ones, in my opinion, the rest of the contestants are present in the market as the useless skeletons of someone’s ambitions.
The contest itself is more like a beauty contest - for two hours all attention is riveted on the contestants, and then what happens to them then does not bother anyone. The operator has mastered the marketing budget, someone has won, the Internet has browned and that's all.
In general, I forgot about this forgotten competition after I saw an ad from velcom that mentioned that local transpot, handyMinsk and itv applications were pre-installed on it, the first two appeared as a result of the competition, the third was aimed at stimulating mobile traffic consumption. Among my friends there is not a single person who would use at least some application that participated in the competition, and indeed any Belarusian application.
