Websites face a fine of 50 thousand euros for installing the Facebook Like button

Germany is even different from its European neighbors - in this country, the laws on the protection of private data are most jealously monitored. Any attempts to introduce tracking technology here may stumble upon an injunction. German homeowners are forcing Google to remove homes from photos of Street View, sniffers in Street View cars were also first discovered in Germany. Even the face recognition function on Facebook is wanted to be outlawed . And now in Germany they have found another online feature that violates the rights of citizens: this is the Facebook Like button (Gefällt mir).

Director of the Independent Privacy Center for the Land of Schleswig-Holstein (region in the north of Germany) Thilo Weichert (Thilo Weichert) said that websites with the Like button illegally send personal user data to servers in the US. These data, in turn, are used by Facebook for hidden profiling of users, which also contradicts the laws of Germany (German Telemedia Act and Federal Data Protection Act) and the European Union. Users do not receive sufficient information about what is happening with their personal data. They have no way to abandon surveillance. In addition, the hidden tracking function on third-party sites is not clearly spelled out on Facebook's ToS, so Facebook’s legal responsibility and compliance with this legislation is not entirely clear.

The jurisdiction of the human rights organization does not allow to sue Facebook and is limited only to the land of Schleswig-Holstein, so that Tilo Weichert and the Independent Privacy Protection Center will sue the German sites.

Tilo Weichert says that websites have time to remove the Like button until the end of September. If this is not done, they face a fine of up to 50,000 euros for violating the Federal Data Protection Act (see the press release of the Independent Privacy Protection Center).

The organization also appeals to users with the advice not to register on the social network to avoid profiling.
