Where do fairy tales about scary Russian hackers come from?

I think it is not a secret to anyone that many world mass media present Russian hackers as one of the largest criminal groups on Earth. Recall at least a story with RBN. Yes, and many residents of the foreign segment of the Internet hold the same opinion. Is this opinion true, I do not know, but where it comes from seems to be understood.



It was like this: I was viewing statistics on Google Analytics about visitors to one of my sites, and I saw investelektrosviaz ltd in information about providers. What was surprised, given that the site is completely regional and local visitors. At that time I did not know what InvestElectroSvyaz was , so I decided to google it. And it is for the Latin name.

And the very first link that appeared before my eyes was a post on Blogger with the promising title Investelektrosviaz Ltd - An Internet Scammer . And so, for those who are too lazy to follow the links, I explain: InvestElectroSvyaz is Corbina, however the author of the above blog believes that this is some kind of Internet fraudsters network.

In general, it looks something like this: a certain Vasya, who uses the services of Corbin, visits the site of a certain John, in order to watch porn very important information. Then this same John goes to Google Analytics or a similar service and sees information about visits from a service provider with the scary name investelektrosviaz ltd, gets scared and goes to write such a comment (by the way, it is real, taken from the record, the link to which I quoted above ):

I’m scammer going to all my blogs. I goes about 100! It's scary. WHO IS: Russian Federation
Investelektrosviaz Ltd. (95.27.175.18 *) WHO?

And then a bunch of other Johns, Aleksov and other honest citizens read like that and the image of a terrible Russian hacker is formed in their heads. Probably this:
