Debian Project 18 years




On August 16, 1993, exactly 18 years ago, Jan Murdoch published in comp.linux.os.development a message on the creation of a new distribution.

Over the past 18 years, the comfort and reliability of Debian has earned the love of a huge number of users around the world. 11 releases were released, the latest one - Debian 6.0 Squeeze, contains almost 30 thousand packages, and in the current unstable branch their number approaches 35. Only officially, Debian was ported to 13 architectures and worked on a wide range of devices, from communicators to space shuttle.

Today, worldwide developers, maintainers and users celebrate the birthday of their favorite distribution.
