We continue the story about various energy efficiency technologies used by Intel in its data centers.
One of the unobvious, but useful measures is the temperature increase in the premises with servers from 12-14 to 20-22 degrees Celsius, which not only significantly reduces the load on the cooling system, but also allows professionals serving the data center to feel more comfortable in the rooms . ')
Automatic lighting is another simple way to increase the energy efficiency of a data center. And let the cost of lighting is only 2-3% of the total energy consumption, its timely shutdown - an elementary thing, which is often forgotten.
The most interesting of all technologies is heat recovery, which we will describe in more detail. In rooms with equipment, hot air is taken from the servers and used for various household needs of the building. The system itself consists of a device that is connected to a hot pipe and produces hot water using the difference in temperature between the hot and cold pipes. The same method is used when cooling water for precision air conditioners - there is also installed the capacity in which the accumulated hot water. Its temperature is about 60 degrees. This water is just used for the needs of hot water supply of the building. First of all directly, i.e. served in sinks, in addition, it is used in showers, cafeterias, etc.
In addition, it is planned to supply the produced hot water to the heating system - since this project is pilot, while recovery is used only for water supply, the heating system using the water produced in this way has not yet been implemented.
Despite the fact that the heat recovery system project is only gaining momentum (the system was launched in January 2011), Intel’s main task is to collect all the data, find out how much heat can be generated by recuperation, how best to use it to get the greatest savings and etc., thus coming to the creation of new technologies that increase energy efficiency not only data centers.
