Intel introduced a semiconductor laser for 40 Gbit / s networks

Intel introduced the world's first semiconductor laser capable of modulating an optical signal for data networks with a capacity of 40 Gbps.

Photonic integrated circuits (photonic integrated circuit, PIC) are a much more cost-effective solution than discrete components. If we analyze the history of the development of fiber optic networks, we can conclude that the appearance of the corresponding PIC provides the foundation for the wide distribution of the next high-speed data transfer standard.

Intel has held advanced positions in the development of optical modulators based on silicon compounds since 2004, when the company first proposed such a device for use in equipment for networks with a capacity of 1 Gb / s. Then, in 2006, the release of PIC for 10 Gbit / s networks followed, and at the beginning of the current year, data transfer at a speed of 30 Gbit / s was demonstrated. And now - another barrier, 40 Gbit / s, is taken.
