US Universities Form Ultra-Fast Network Infrastructure

“Ultrafast” means that educational institutions are going to deploy an internal (for universities) network infrastructure with data transfer rates of up to 1 Gbit / s. Yes, of course, this speed is not a record, the 100 Gbit / s bar has already been taken for a long time. But US educational institutions are going to put ultra high-speed networks into operation, and not just be records on test benches. The project was named Gig.U: The University Community Next Generation Project.

The project is already involved several dozen educational institutions that are planning to create high-speed infrastructure, not only for the universities themselves, but also for student campuses. Given the number of project participants, as well as the size of some of them, we can safely say that the project will be successful. Of course, in the case of the implementation of this project, they will be interested in and partners of universities, business representatives and others.

Earlier, if you remember, a similar project has already been launched, this is the Google Community Fiber Initiative. In February of this year, representatives of the “Corporation of Good” chose the region for the implementation of their project, and started its implementation. So far, there is no news from the “battlefield”, but it seems that Google will make an announcement when everything is ready. According to the plan, the project Google Community Fiber Initiative should be implemented in 2012.

Unfortunately, the participants of the Gig.U project do not say when it is planned to begin the practical implementation of their ideas. It is interesting, by the way, that most of the universities - project participants are located nearby, but there are also remote representatives of Gig.U. So, the two most distant universities are the University of Hawaii, and the University of Alaska. I don’t even know how these participants will be connected to the common infrastructure, they are very far from the rest. But let's hope that everything will work out.
