Mozilla is going to separate Thunderbird into a separate organization.

The head of Mozilla, Mitchell Baker (Mitchell Baker) asks the community opinion on the further development of the project open mail client Thunderbird. Baker himself offers the public three options for the development of Thunderbird, including the creation of a new organization such as the Mozilla Foundation .

Mitchell writes that Thunderbird is overshadowed by "monstrous energy and a huge community formed around Firefox", with the result that Thunderbird does not receive the attention it deserves.

To solve the problem, Mitchell Baker offers the following options:
  1. Create a non-profit organization similar to the Mozilla Foundation — The Thunderbird Foundation;
  2. Create a branch of the Mozilla Foundation that develops and promotes Thunderbird;
  3. Launch Thunderbird as a community project (like SeaMonkey) and create small independent divisions and consulting company with the help of Thunderbird developers to continue developing and protecting Thunderbird users.

Thunderbird has a lot of its users (I myself use this email client), but this client has not received a small part of the popularity that Firefox has achieved on its front. It is hoped that with the new course, Thunderbird will gain more functionality and will be a great alternative to Outlook.
