Free WiFi for all residents of London (512 Kbps)

The Virgin Media provider is set to deploy a citywide WiFi network in London, which will compete with the Openzone network from British Telecom. The difference is that BT takes money for access, and Virgin Media will be absolutely free at 512 Kbps . Virgin Media’s fixed Internet subscribers will receive a normal speed of 10 Mbps, also at no extra charge.

WiFi routers will be installed in all distribution cabinets where Virgin Media cable network splitters are located, which covers almost all of London. Thus, the most extensive network of free hotspots in Europe will be created if the city authorities give permission for the project.

This is very good news for residents of the British capital, because now they have to pay up to six pounds for 90 minutes of surfing on the BT Openzone network. The executive director of Virgin Media said the project would cost his company just “a couple of million pounds,” but he would “make them [BT] behave honestly,” that is, establish more honest rates. Indeed, six pounds (275 rubles) for an hour and a half of the Internet - this is somehow too much.

Currently, it is quite difficult for providers to earn money on WiFi access points when they are competed by mobile operators with low-cost 3G tariffs. However, the head of Virgin Media considers the quality and speed of 3G unsatisfactory compared to WiFi. He is confident that WiFi is still relevant until cellular operators have deployed 4G networks.

A similar project from the American cable operator Cablevision, which last year quickly covered New York with thousands of hotspots, served as a model for the London WiFi project, while cellular operators tried to provide 3G normal bandwidth for numerous smartphones. Optimum WiFi wireless network is free for all Cablevision home cable subscribers.
