Some time ago, a
topic appeared on Habré that such a major player in the IT market as Google acquired PittPatt, intending to use its results to recognize objects in images. True, some time before that, Eric Schmidt made an unequivocal
statement that his company, although it has all the technical capabilities to accomplish this task, however, due to problems with the legitimate use of its capabilities, Google will not use it in its products yet. and technology.
Apparently, DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency - an agency of advanced defense research projects), being an agency of the US Department of Defense, will not have such problems as the search giant. A few days ago it became known that an organization that was at the origins of creating the Internet and the BSD version of UNIX was going to create Visual Media Reasoning (VMR) software, the purpose of which was to research photographs, recognize objects and catalog them for a particular attribute. The development will be carried out by the I2O division, which specializes in information systems for monitoring and control, high-performance computing technology, data mining, and pattern recognition. Among the obvious applications of VMR, the authors cite its use in intelligence and law enforcement organizations, which are forced to deal with huge volumes of digital images that need automated analysis.
Curious is the fact that the development - it is quite real and fairly close future. The first prototype of the system will be completed by the end of August and the testing process will begin. Moreover, the seriousness of the intentions of DARPA and the quality of the product created by the agency can hardly be questioned, given its more than extensive experience working on more than fundamental projects like ARPANET or (and) the TCP-IP protocol stack.
