The third largest Bitcoin exchange lost the file wallet.dat

The administrator of the bitcoin exchange bitomat.pl Bartek Shabbat (Bartek Shabbat) reported that as a result of the server upgrade on July 26, 2011 at about 23:00 he lost the wallet.dat file .

Despite the investigation, the administrator writes, still could not figure out how this happened. The wallet.dat file and other files were stored in the EC2 virtual machine, and they were deleted during the “RAM upgrade”.

From the administrator's explanations, you can make the assumption that he did not make backups (snapshots) and he accidentally deleted the virtual machine during the RAM upgrade process (that is, when the virtual machine was stopped and settings were changed). The administrator himself suggests that the need for RAM upgrades was triggered by a “third party” who hacked his account on Amazon and deliberately caused a degradation in server performance to subsequently hide the traces of their actions.

Bartek Shabbat also adds that he is looking for a buyer for the sale of the exchange, the cost is 17,000 BTC.
