Soros Foundation encourages grant recipients to use Creative Commons

The George Soros Open Society Foundations Foundation (Open Society Foundations) encourages grant recipients to release their works under Creative Commons licenses . Details on the Creative Commons blog , Foundation website, and the wiki section on grants . And below is the translation of the post “Why we support Creative Commons” from the Foundation’s website .

In the Open Society Foundation, we believe that our mission is progressive when the work that we support and create is widely available to the public. That is why we have adopted a new policy that encourages grantees to release their work under Creative Commons licenses. I spoke with Vera Franz, who leads the Information Society and Intellectual Property Reform Initiatives in the Open Society Information Program, about the significance of this approach.

In short, what is Creative Commons licensing? Why use it?
')
First of all, a Creative Commons (CC) license is the most effective tool for creators when they need to select a work license. Traditional copyright claims - “do you want to use my work? Then get permission. ” In contrast, Creative Commons believes that "this and that can be done with my work." You should refer to me as an author, but you can sing my song, or redraw my picture in a notebook. In addition, thanks to Creative Commons, it became possible to legalize most of the collaborative creativity of the entire Internet.

The Open Society Foundation has been using CC licensing for quite some time. Are there any consequences?

I believe this license helps the Foundation achieve its mission. The idea of the Open Communities is based on the widest possible dissemination of ideas - instead of forcing people to get our permission to listen to our latest podcast, or read our latest news, we want people to criticize us, debate with us as freely as possible. That is why we chose CC.

Why do funds encourage recipients of grants to use CC?

First and foremost, we want those who receive our grants, of course, with respect for their copyright, to know that there is a choice between complete control over the work and permission to use it.

What is the biggest CC licensing flaw that you most often encounter, and what is your answer?

I often hear that Creative Commons is not suitable for commercial use. This is absolutely not true. As an example, a profit-oriented publisher - Bloomsbury Academic - distributes its books on the Internet under free licenses, and at the same time offers printed copies at reasonable prices. And there are many other similar examples.

What are the challenges for CC in the near future?

Creative Commons licenses must be legally enforceable, and that the legitimacy of CC licenses is confirmed by all past courts. The main goal is to change the position of licenses, to make them use not only the original supporters, but also other people, the masses. That is why we want whales such as the BBC or large funds, including research funds, to accept SS licenses. I am sure that we are on the right track. As Lawrence Lessig noted well, today anyone who has a computer can record any sound and take any photo around him. Thanks to this, the means of creation became the means of interaction, and this will become the language of the literacy of the new generation.
