In May 2011, geeks around the world discussed with admiration the product of the British game developer David Braben - the Raspberry Pi flash drive for $ 25. This is a full-fledged general-purpose computer for Ubuntu 9 with HDMI-and USB-connectors for connecting a monitor, keyboard and mouse. Two months later, the motherboard specifications were approved, and now the alpha version of the Raspberry Pi has been sent into production .

The original specifications, apparently, have not changed much: the 700 MHz ARM11 processor, 128-256 MB of SDRAM, support for OpenGL ES 2.0 and USB 2.0, composite and HDMI video outputs, as well as a general-purpose I / O port where you can connect For example, a video camera. The software package for Ubuntu includes a browser, KOffice office software, as well as Python, Iceweasel, etc. CPU power is enough to view HD-video.

The alpha version of the motherboard is slightly different from the final one: it is 20% larger in size, made in six layers instead of four, contains several expensive components that will be removed from the final release, as well as several test features that will also be removed.

The final version of the computer will be the size of a credit card. These are the minimum dimensions to fit all the necessary connectors on the board. David Braben promises to publish photos of the alpha version soon. Obviously, it will look a little more cumbersome than the sample in the photo above.

Following the example of BBC Micro , in the end, two versions of the computer are planned: a standard one for $ 25 (128 MB RAM, no SMSC LAN9512 USB 2.0 hub) and more expensive $ 5-10 more expensive (256 MB RAM).

David Braben is confident that sales of the Raspberry Pi will begin before the end of 2011.
