Spam in Excel spreadsheets
Commtouch Software , which develops anti-spam products, discovered spam with an Excel spreadsheet on July 21. “Left” messages promoted stocks in applications with names such as invoice 20202.xls, stock information-3572.xls, and requested report.xls.
Fraudsters operating under the “pumping and dumping” scheme, using a new type of spam, illegally promote shares, increasing their value, and then sell them and get profit from it.
Amir Lev (Amir Lev) from Commtouch says that this innovation signals the appearance of spam with other formats and is expected to receive unwanted emails with attachments of PowerPoint-presentations or Word documents. Using such attachments bypasses spam filters that use content analysis.
