Created software to calculate key members of the community

Specialists from Microsoft Research, together with a sociologist from Cornell University, have developed a mathematical method for calculating the people who have the greatest value in a social network.

For each participant in the online community, so-called “structural signatures” are calculated, which take into account all communications with other members of the community. Then a special method of visualization of signatures is applied, after which the community leaders become visible with the naked eye.

As an example, the researchers analyzed 5700 messages from 450 active users in three Usenet newsgroups, which revealed key participants who participate in many discussions and answer questions (answer people) - they, experts, have a dominant position in the community. They can be recognized by a few messages (one or two) on a large number of topics, they avoid lengthy discussions and appear with a replica only when someone has a specific question that they can competently answer. Interestingly, experts also differ in that they have few strong social ties with other members of the community, that is, they are actually “above the crowd”.

The generated software can be used in Web 2.0 social web projects and web forums to automatically encourage the most valuable users. In addition, the program allows you to find the most relevant information in a large archive of discussions.

This is not the first development of this kind. Other researchers have previously created software that identifies intelligent community leaders using content analysis of messages in a chat or forum.
