Choosing the right operating system for their IBM PC, IBM executives met a guy named Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, a small company from Redmond. During the conversation, Mr. Gates explicitly announced that his company had an operating system written by them that is perfectly suited for the new IBM product. To clarify the fact that he bought the license for the 86-DOS operating system earlier from the programmer of Seattle Computer Products Tim Patterson, the head of Microsoft did not.

On July 27, 1981, Microsoft paid Patterson another $ 75,000 and received full rights to distribute his platform. On the same day, the operating system received a new name MS-DOS - Microsoft Disk Operating System.
