Red Hat Announces VMware War on Cloud Front

Announcing another 65 companies to join the Open Virtualization Alliance , Red Hat declared war on VMware in the virtualization and cloud computing market. The aforementioned alliance was created in May by such giants as Red Hat, HP, IBM and Intel in order to promote the KVM virtualization system. During the month of the alliance's existence, more than fifty companies joined this initiative, and Scott Crenshaw, responsible for the cloudy direction of Red Hat, called it a response to the proprietary VMware platform.

Red Hat began to actively promote open virtualization a few years ago after buying Qumranet . Today, KVM has broad support in both RHEL and RHEV / CloudForms.

KVM virtualization is built into the linux kernel and is favored by many Open Source supporters, but for this KVM had to engage in a tough battle with Xen. The much less well-known KVM had to convince developers of its maturity in order to gain confidence in the corporate market.

At the May Red Hat Summit, company executives firmly stated that KVM is ready for serious tasks. “The gateways have opened and we see a wave of universal support for KVM and Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization,” said Crenshaw, vice president and general manager of the Red Hat cloud business. “Vendor lock-in does not benefit anyone except VMware ... growing discontent with VMware hegemony ". According to Crenshaw, VMware's Cloud Foundry implies openness, but if you look at the entire VMware virusization, it is based on proprietary VMware ESX technology. Regarding Microsoft virtualization, Crenshaw added that the openness and gratuity of Azure is highly controversial.
