Discontinued Google Toolbar for Firefox

Another Google product is being phased out. This time, such a fate befell the Google Toolbar extension for the Firefox browser. An unnecessary repetition of functionality is cited as a reason, since many of the functions of the Google Toolbar are already built into the browser or implemented as third-party extensions.

The help section reports that the Google Toolbar will not be updated for Firefox 5 and later versions of Fire Fox. As a replacement, they offer a long list of extensions that can replace each of the Google Toolbar functions with links to relevant search results in the Mozilla extension directory: form auto-completion , translation , grammar check , social bookmarks , bookmarked site preview , Gmail notifications .

Although the “officially” Google Toolbar is not supported for Firefox 5, but in fact it can be made to work in the fifth, and sixth, and subsequent versions, if you first install the Add-on Compatibility Reporter and restart the browser. Here is a screenshot of the Google Toolbar in Firefox 7 Alpha 2 (Aurora).

The Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer was released in 2000, and for Firefox in 2005, and at that time there was an unofficial Googlebar extension. It allowed you to watch the PR of the current page and tried to duplicate the functionality of the official Google extension for IE in Firefox.

However, after the release of the official Google Toolbar for Firefox, the update to the third-party extension was discontinued.
