Yandex search and Rambler mail migrate from FreeBSD to Linux

Yandex translates its search to Ubuntu, thus completely getting rid of FreeBSD in the company. In turn, Rambler transfers its mail from FreeBSD to Debian.

One of the main developers of Yandex, Anatoly Orlov, explained : “We made the decision to switch when we realized that for a couple of years we want to virtualize in some not very expensive way several tens of thousands of machines, and there’s absolutely nothing to offer to FreeBSD. According to him, the search will slowly migrate to Ubuntu throughout the year.

On the transition to Linux Mail Rambler said the main developer of the service Andrei Shetuhin. CentOS and openSuSe were considered as options, but the choice was made in favor of Debian. The main reasons for the rejection of FreeBSD, Andrei, called the “lack of normal development tools, debugging and deployment, as well as the inadequate package manager in today's world.”

What the search for the Rambler is currently working on is unknown. As for Yandex mail, according to the company's representative, Anton Zabanny, it traditionally runs on Linux - at different times on Debian, Ubuntu and RHEL. Now the majority of Yandex.Mail servers work on RHEL.
